The cast and crew didn’t want to wait even longer to begin shooting season six so they worked through the winter in the cold.
Storyboard: Ardsmuir Opening Shot
“A sweeping aerial shot of moorland with Ardsmuir Prison coming into view opens Season 6 of Outlander. This sequence was achieved using a drone and then blending a CG prison seamlessly into the environment.” – VFX Supervisor Jon Neill on Ardsmuir
Fun Fact: Tartan Square
“The small square of tartan that Old Charlie places on James McCready after he has been killed is the same tartan that we used on the show for Bonnie Prince Charlie in Season 2. Costume Designer, Trisha Biggar, thought this would be a fun wee Easter Egg to include for fans.”
-VFX Supervisor Jon Neill
Pre-Viz: Ardsmuir Yard
“We basically decided to not rebuild Craigmillar Castle but to rebuild new, unseen parts of Ardsmuir Prison… So, we kind of created a whole new kind of playground to play in.”
–Production Designer Mike Gunn
Storyboard: Tartan Scene
“We filmed a lot of flashbacks with Jamie back in Ardsmuir Prison… much more from Jamie’s perspective to try and make those scenes really intense.”
–Director Kate Cheeseman
