In the episode, I Am Not Alone, Jemmy has lice and Brianna cuts his hair off to get rid of these lice. Jemmy, now with shorn hair has a nevus on the side of his head. Brianna has never seen one before and Roger explains it’s not harmful and isn’t something that appears before two years of age. He should know, he has one, they are hereditary. To Brianna and Roger this means Jemmy is biologically Roger’s child. It is a good indication if his fairness is not.
Fans have cited that back in, Journeycake, Jemmy is playing with Claire’s opal and the thing cracks. Roger and Brianna, discuss why this could have happened. They come to the hopeful conclusion that Jemmy has to be the product of two time travelers, making Jemmy’s ability stronger which is why the opal got hot and cracked. Fans do not see a reason for the nevus story line.
I’ll tell you why it is important. It is true, the opal’s reaction to Jem, could be an indication of parentage; however, we’ve encountered people in the past who have the ability to travel. There is no guarantee Stephen Bonnet isn’t one who could; even if he doesn’t know he can. Brianna and Roger’s speculation that Jemmy could be the product of two travelers only means Jemmy’s father could have the ability to travel but they don’t know if their assumption is even right. Maybe the opal’s reaction to Jemmy is because he’s a child and has no control over said ability.
Brianna and Roger are speculating because they are not sure what the rules are for time travel. Is Jem’s stronger ability because he is the product of two time travelers or because he’s a child? They don’t actually know as that point. None of these travelers actually know how it works. They are creating hypothesis and trying to prove them. But at this point in Journeycake they aren’t sure if they are right.
The show is building a case for Jem’s paternity. Yes, Roger has claimed Jemmy has his son and therefore it isn’t very important but I’m sure it is something Brianna and even Roger think about. They don’t want Jemmy to have a single tie to the man that raped and terrorized her. So this nevus breaks any imagined ties. Not only is Jemmy’s ability to feel the stones stronger than Claire, Brianna and Roger but he has a hereditary mark on his body similar to Roger. Sans paternity test, this is the evidence they need to sever all ties to Bonnet’s ghost. This is not pointless story, it is simply a continuation of the hopeful speculation from season five.
