Recap: 405 Savages

Claire’s medical expertise proves invaluable, but she begins to fear for her life when tragedy strikes her patients’ household. Jamie and Young Ian travel to a nearby town to recruit settlers for Fraser’s Ridge.

Savages opens in 1768. Adawehi and Claire are together prepping herbs and teaching each other their language. Adawehi wants to know if Claire has a child and Claire tells her about Brianna who is very far away. Adawehi looks pensive and then tells Claire her daughter is here and Claire believes she’s saying her daughter is in her heart.

Later at the cabin, Jamie is looking for his hat and Claire is packing supplies to go to the Mueller’s to deliver a baby. Young Ian arrives with Jamie’s hat which was in the pig-pen. Jamie asks if Claire wants him to return soon and Claire reminds him she’s been there alone before. Jamie helps her get ready then asks if Brianna has a birthmark on her neck.

Claire is stunned thinking she never told him. He says he saw it in a dream and kissed her there. It seems Jamie has some sort of sight.

Inverness 1971, Roger is asking the cab company about Brianna’s destination which was Craig na Dun. She was picked up from Baird’s Bed & Breakfast. Roger heads over to speak with Miss Baird who seems to be related to the previous Mrs. Baird. Miss Baird tells Roger Brianna was there but says she left nothing. When Roger walks off disappointed Miss Baird tells him to wait and then retrieves a letter that she was supposed to send after a year. She gives him the letter and then tells him to find a nice Scottish lass.

In Woollams Creek, Jamie and Young Ian are passing out flyers which tells people about their offer of land. Jamie goes in search of Graham MacNeil but finds his wife who hits on him.

At the Mueller’s, Petronella’s baby has been born and Claire has cleaned up the little girl. She gives the baby over to her mother and grandmother. Mrs. Mueller offers to share her grandchild with Claire.

In Woollams Creek, Jamie is telling some men about his deal. He offers 100 acres and now rent until it yields a good crop. It seems all the men aren’t interested which baffles Jamie and Young Ian as they’ve never heard of farmers refusing land. Jamie goes to speak with one farmer named Bryan. Bryan explains that many of the farmers spent years cultivating land but when it prospered they were taxed into losing their land because of dishonest tax collectors.

Back at the Mueller’s, Claire goes out to meet Mr. Mueller and his son who are returning from Cross Creek. Claire makes plans to return to their home to check on Petronella and the baby. They go inside where Mr. Mueller gives the baby a doll. They tell Claire they’ve named the baby Klara after her much to Claire’s delight.

Moments later, Rollo barks and the Mueller men go out to defend their home from the Cherokee who are getting water for their horses. Claire rushes out with them to spot the Mueller’s. She explains to Tawodi that the Mueller’s don’t see things the way she does and asks that they move to another part of the creek just to keep the peace. Tawodi agrees because of Claire’s friendship to Adawehi.

Tawodi leaves a blessing for the water which upsets Mr. Mueller.

Claire and Rollo return home where Claire drops on her bed out of exhaustion.

The next morning, Claire tends the animals and her medicinal herbs. She does some other house hold choirs and then notices one of the candlesticks is missing. The second day is much like the first.

In Woollams Creek, Young Ian and Jamie are packing to return home when their horse bit breaks. Jamie sends Ian to have it repaired.

At the Smithy, the cranky blacksmith is not willing to do the work after a long day. Young Ian asks what it will cost. Murtagh the Smithy asks for 21 shillings and Young Ian pays it.

Jamie goes looking for Mr. MacNeil again but he’s still not there and his wife is persistent. Jamie isn’t willing and returns to the wagon. Young Ian confesses the price and Jamie goes to yell at the blacksmith and gets a huge surprise when it is Murtagh.

Murtagh and Jamie are both stunned and hug. Jamie explains to Young Ian who Murtagh is and then introduces Young Ian to Murtagh. Murtagh wonders how they got there and Jamie tells him about the land and needing settlers. Jamie has so much to tell him and Murtagh wants to hear it all.

Back on the Ridge, Claire is tending the livestock on the third day when Pastor Gottfried appears to tell her Petronella and the baby died of measles (likely from the doll). Gottfried tells Claire Herr Mueller went crazy and is worried he believes Claire did something to kill them. The Pastor is looking for Herr Mueller in hopes of stopping him from doing something regretful.

Claire prepares for the worst, readying their gun.

Murtagh is telling them about being indentured. He says when his master died his widow sold him the smith. He mastered all sorts of smithery and Jamie asks if he can help him with some silver. Young Ian offers that Jamie wants a surprise for his wife. Murtagh believes Jamie married again and Jamie tells him to go fetch some ale but Young Ian has no money as Murtagh has is all. Murtagh returns the money and Young Ian goes off.

Jamie tells Murtagh Claire returned to him. Murtagh is clearly happy. Jamie tells Murtagh his daughter’s name is Brianna and she lives in 1971. He tells Murtagh she’s at university and that woman of that time are entitled to more than now. Jamie wants Murtagh to return with him but the forge is in Woollams Creek. Jamie is willing to make him one on 10,000 acres. Murtagh tries to tell Jamie about the taxes. Jamie is the eternal optimist but Murtagh isn’t willing to go. He instead invites Jamie to a Regulator meeting.

Back on the Ridge, Rollo growls but Claire decides it is just the wind.

In Woollams Creek, Jamie and Young Ian attend a meeting of the Regulators lead by Murtagh. The men of the meeting are tired of being robbed by the Governor’s dishonest tax collectors. Jamie seems a bit concerned how riled up the men are at Murtagh’s words.

After the meeting the men are signing their names to say there are joining the cause. Jamie is concerned things will become violent. He now has Young Ian and Claire to worry about. Jamie tells Murtagh he gave his word to the Governor but he won’t interfere with them.

Herr Mueller is at the door and Claire asks what he wants. Mueller comes in and seems worried she would be sick. Claire realizes he’s not a risk to her and puts her gun down. He tells her his daughter and granddaughter died. Claire tries to explain it wasn’t the Cherokee but an illness brought from Cross Creek. He won’t hear of it.

He gives her a wrapped package which she thinks is the doll but when she opens it she finds the scalps of Adawehi and others. She is very upset. Herr Mueller thinks Adawehi was a witch. Claire knows she can’t reason with him and tells him goodbye, clearly meaning she wants him gone.

Claire wraps the scalps and puts them in a box which she sets in the fire.

At the Mueller’s Tadowi and his mean set fire to the Mueller home in retaliation for killing their people. Herr Mueller arrives to find his wife ablaze and is promptly shot and killed. The Cherokee watch as the cabin burns.

Claire wakes to Rollo’s growls and hears Jamie calling for her. When she opens the door he realizes something is wrong and Claire asks to be held.

Later, Claire is gathering firewood when she hears someone whistling The Boodie Woogie Buggle Boy tune. Murtagh is approaching. The two hug and she asks him in.

In the future, we hear Brianna’s words to Roger in the letter. She’s found out something bad happened and she had to go help them. She asks he doesn’t follow her.

We see Brianna go through the stones.
