Brianna tells Claire after Geillis goes through the stones that she heard them. Both Claire and Brianna hear the stones. Roger also appears to have heard the stones. This seems to be an indication you have the ability to travel.
Initially, when Claire went through the stones there was a strange buzzing sound.
Claire herself tells us Gillian believed you needed gemstones to protect and guide. So does this mean a gemstone is needed to control the distance of your travel which would explain Geillis large jump.
Flashing forward, Claire revisits the past and reveals to her daughter, Brianna, the truth. Back in the 18th century, the Battle of Culloden has arrived, and Jamie must do everything he can to save the ones he loves.
Jamie and Claire set out to stop the Battle of Culloden by sabotaging Bonnie Prince Charlie. On the eve of the battle, Claire and Jamie even discuss killing Charles Stuart and are overheard by Dougal who attacks and dies by Jamie’s hand.
Jamie knows he can’t stop the battle but he can save Claire by sending her back to Frank.
Claire wondered if they could change history. They didn’t manage. Is it impossible? Or is it that a war has too many variables to prevent?
Claire tells Roger he is related to Geillis Duncan who she met after traveling back to 1743. Geillis was to be burned as a witch after she gave birth to the child she carried. Claire knew the child was Dougal’s and tells Roger his genealogical chart is wrong when it gets back to that point in history and that he is the descendant of Geillis Duncan and Dougal MacKenzie.

As Jamie puts all of his efforts into turning the Jacobite army away from the impending slaughter, Claire attempts to comfort the sick Alex Randall. Alex reveals an outrageous plan to save the mother of his child.
Claire believed Jack Randall was Frank’s direct ancestor (that is what Frank believed) but after the dual with Jamie was left unable to father children. This caused Claire to believe they could change history and Frank wouldn’t be born.
In Edinburgh, Claire discovered Alex Randall and Mary together. Mary confesses to being pregnant with Alex’s child. On Alex’s deathbed he asks Jack to marry Mary and protect her with his name.
