Recap: 303 All Debts Paid

In prison, Jamie discovers that an old foe has become the warden – and has the power to make his life hell. Claire and Frank both put their best foot forward in marriage, but an uninvited guest shatters the illusion.

All Debts Paid opens in Boston 1956 where Claire is reading medical book while Frank makes an English breakfast in hopes of curbing some of Brianna’s American-ness. Claire asks Frank to a movie but he’s seen them with his girlfriend. Claire looks upset but they agreed as long as he was discreet.

In 1755, Jamie is in Ardsmuir Prison where Major Grey has just shown up for his post and is told about Red Jamie who he remembers with a bit of hatred (but is it really?). Jamie goes back into the cells to talk with MURTAGH!!!! telling him about the new warden before heading to Major Grey’s office where he informs the man that the prisoners eat the rats when they can catch them.

In Boston, Claire is celebrating her graduation from Medical School with Frank, Joe, Brianna and some other classmates but Frank has no intention of sticking with the celebrating. His latest paramour shows up at the door expecting him to be alone but that is clearly not the case. Claire clears everyone out to the restaurant so Frank can have his alone time. Later the two fight and Claire suggests they divorce but Frank doesn’t want to lose Brianna. Claire tells him she’d never take Bree away from him but he doesn’t trust her promises anymore.

Scotland 1750 something, the English have discovered Duncan Kerr who is babbling about curse gold and white witches. Major Grey offers to remove Jamie’s irons if he helps translate the French and Gaelic. Jamie also wants blankets and medicine for the prisoners but Major Grey doesn’t have the resources and Jamie settles for Murtagh being treated. Jamie gives Major Grey all the information he wants too from Duncan.

Murtagh wants to know if it could be Claire but Jamie is unsure.

Major Grey invites Jamie to dinner and Jamie goes to negotiation with Major Grey about the food for the prisoners. He asks if they can hunt which shocks Grey thinking he’s asking for weapons. Jamie informs him that they can set snares and gather watercress to prevent scurvy. Grey is curious where he learned about the watercress and Jamie tells him from his wife who is gone. Jamie later goes back to the cells and tells the other men about the meal and the sauce on the meat.

Then days later while on work detail he disappears from the crew with the help of other prisoners. Major Grey and his men are searching for Jamie and when he does to take a piss, Jamie comes up behind him and takes Major Grey’s sword explaining this is how it is done. Jamie makes it clear he remembers John and then asks John to kill him as promised all those years ago. John refuses and asks Jamie if he found the Frenchman gold. Jamie tells him all he found was a jewel but John doesn’t believe him until Jamie gives him the jewel. Later, a doctor comes in to treat Murtagh.

Back in 1966, Brianna just graduated from high school with a beaming Frank and Claire in the audience.

Back in Scotland, in Major Grey’s office we see Jamie and Grey playing a game of chess and behaving like friends. Grey informs Jamie that he also wanted to die after Culloden because he lost a very special friend. Jamie talks about Claire actually saying her name. Grey reaches out and places a comforting hand on Jamie’s but then lets it linger longingly. Jamie becomes upset and tells to remove his hand or he’ll kill him.

In Boston 1966, now that the graduation is over Frank tells Claire he is going to England. Claire starts to comment about joining them but Frank informs her he got a job at Cambridge and will be moving there and divorcing her. Claire wonders about his girlfriend and Frank tells her they will marry as soon as Claire and he divorce. He wants Brianna to go with him. Claire is livid and tells him he can do whatever he likes but Brianna isn’t going. Frank storms out and Claire gets a call about a patient that needs surgery.

It is now winter in Scotland 1700s and all the prisoners from Ardsmuir are being transported to the Colonies to be indentured servants for 14 years except Jamie. Jamie ends up being taken to an estate in Helwater where he will be set up to work for a nobleman. Grey tells Jamie it is the best he could do and he should maybe not use his own name as it is high recognizable. Jamie wants to know why Grey would go out of his way for him after he wouldn’t let Grey have his way with him. Grey regrets the action.

Claire is just out of surgery giving the news to the family when Joe appears to tell her Frank has been in a car accident. He’s dead. Claire runs to the room where Frank is laid out and kisses him telling him she did truly love him and that he was her very first love.
