Recap: 311 Uncharted

After making a leap of faith, Claire washes up on an island where survival is her only option. Navigating treacherous waters crippled the Artemis, so Jamie devises a joyful moment for his crew in the midst of setbacks.

Claire awakes drifting in the ocean near and island. As soon as she makes shore her first task is to find clean water. Claire stumbles though the vegetation finding only sips on large leafy palms until the sun begins to set and warmth is her next necessity. Claire manages to start a fire, burning her bustle as kindling, and drifts to sleep. The next morning she wakes covered in ants. Now injured, she continues her search for eater and civilization. Sleeping another night in the brush she wakes to a snake slithering over her.

As Claire stumbles delirious through the trees, she hears a man preaching but faints before she can reach him. When she wakes she’s in bed though tied up. A woman comes in and helps Claire drink but refuses to untie Claire. The curt woman leaves with Claire dirty clothing, noticing the zipper.

When Claire comes to later, the man she saw preaching is with her. His name is Father Fogden and he’s happy to have an Englishwoman to speak with. He mentions his goat Arabella has just given birth and believes Claire brought good luck with her. Father Fogden unties her explaining it was to prevent her from scratching. Claire is a little alarmed when the Father starts talking to a coconut and asks gently about if it is possible to find passage to Jamaica.

At dinner, Father Fogden recounts his own tale of being a priest in Cuba where he fell in love with Ermenegilda, a married woman. The two ran away together with Mamacita as Ermenegilda would never leave Mamacita. Father Fogden doesn’t seem keen on discussion Claire’s departure and realizing she’s hat his mercy, Claire explains that much like him she too has a great love and she needs to get to him in Jamaica. Fogden seems to understand but will have to consult Coco the coconut tomorrow.

The next morning, Fogden finds Claire conversing with Coco about her departure. However, further discussion is put on hold when Mamacita alerts Father Fogden to the demise of Arabella the goat. According to Mamacita, Arabella has been slaughtered and roasted on a spit. Fogden retrieves the goats head and pours a jar of bugs culled from a cave over them. The bugs will clean all the flesh off the bones. He mentions the bugs are from the cave called Abandawe and Claire instantly remembers Margaret Campbell’s warning about Abandawe. Father Fogden tells her the cave is on Jamaica but he has more important things to deal with as a Chinese sailor who he believes killed Arabella.

Claire is stunned by this revelation and wonders if he is referring to Yi Tien Cho. Is Jamie also on the island? Claire runs off to the beach hoping to find Jamie.

On the beach we see the Artemis has washed ashore after a sea-going mishap. They are attempting to repair the masts so they can continue on their journey, hoping to find Claire. The crew finally succeeds and is headed back to the ship as Claire races to the beach. Despite her screams they do not hear her. Claire is distressed but remembers the mirror so took. She flashes it at the retreating boats where Jamie notices the signal. He calls for a spy glass and gasps when he sees Claire ashore. Jamie and Claire embrace on the shore.

As Claire was racing toward the beach a particularly sharp branch cut her arm and Yi Tien Cho is sowing it up. Jamie informs Claire he gave his blessing to Marsali and Fergus though they must be wed by a priest. Claire knows of a priest but first Yi Tien Cho must apologize for murdering Arabella.

Claire helps Marsali in getting ready for the wedding and Marsali confides that she wants to like having sex with Fergus but doesn’t want to have a baby right away. Claire discusses different prevention methods.

On the beach, Father Fogden is preforming the ceremony though he seems a bit sloshed. He fears that Fergus could be missing other parts besides his hand but is assured it isn’t so. However, when Fogden needs Fergus’s full name, Fergus is unsure what to say. Jamie speaks up saying his name is Fergus Claudel Fraser.

Back on the boat, Claire is slurping down her turtle soup which might have a lot of alcohol in it. She’s running a fever and Jamie has to help her administer a shot of penicillin. He’s a bit reluctant to stab her with the needle so Claire takes over.

Claire turns her attention back to Jamie becoming very amorous. Jamie is sure she is drunk and is not inclined to take advantage but Claire is determined, having him bolt the door before she makes her move.
