Is it just me or are you a little in love with Buck MacKenzie? I remember liking him in the book but like a lot of what has happened in this season, his story isn’t in the books.
In the books, Buck does a lot of what we’ve seen in the show. Pretended to be a Nucklavee to get Jem and Mandy to bring him food. He was then found out by Roger. Roger and Brianna explain he’s a time traveler like he is and that they are family.
Buck then becomes very loyal to Roger and Brianna’s family. He does see them as his and goes out of his way—1739—to protect them.
But after Roger, Brianna, and the kids are reunited in 1739, Buck tries going back to his own time to find his family. It is then assumed his heart issues kill him on the trip through the stones. We don’t get to see him again, which is sad but you kind of forget he was there when reading the books.
But the showrunners took yet another detour and had him travel to 1981 to check up on Rob Cameron who was preparing to come after the MacKenzie’s through the stones. Buck kills him, steals his gemstone and travels back to 1780 to find the MacKenzies on Fraser’s Ridge—though he gets there when Brianna and Roger aren’t at home.
Oh and did you appreciate that this time around Jamie and Young Ian didn’t just attack without seeing who it was who was asking after their family member—remember they just beat and sold Roger.
Then we got Roger and Buck working together and Buck confessing he went to the future and killed Rob Cameron so he wouldn’t be able to follow them into the past and come after them for the Frenchman’s Gold.
But also while he’s on the Ridge, he saves Jamie’s life when Captain Cunningham was going to take it AND he is a great uncle to all the kiddos. AND he is starting to appreciate that Claire and Brianna are badass women all while basically following Jamie’s lead.
He might be rough around the edges but I’m a little in love with Buck—I mean the man is a looker too! And now I’m worrying about him. He’s in the past with all of the Fraser’s and MacKenzie’s. Jamie has this death date hanging over his head but Buck and Jamie are kind of built the same and we are assuming Jamie gets out of this death date thing.
Please give Buck a happily ever after.
