Recap: 106 Birthright

Henry continues to look for Julia until a new discovery threatens to end his search.

Birthright has Julia in labor and Henry’s search possibly coming to an end. Julia continues her attempts to escape. And we see Arch Bug’s true nature.

Labor

Julia’s water breaks and she’s quickly confined to the dining room with woman from the area coming to help her delivery her baby. But things take an ominous turn when Davina informs the women that Julia seduces Simon Fraser and is passing off her child as the Laird’s. She also adds Julia tried to seduce Brian, which I’m not sure is true at all.

The woman, who were originally there to support her, quickly turn on Julia demanding the name of the fathers baby. These women had thought Julia’s baby was the prophesied King of Scotland but now they have to wonder. Davina pushes them to force Julia into repenting while we get horrible flashbacks of Davina’s own encounters with Simon Fraser.

Davina was a maid working in his how and forced himself on her repeatedly until she got pregnant with Brian. Davina has done everything in her power to protect Brian all these years. Julia pleads with Davina. Davina finally realizes Julia is just like she was and she’s just trying to protect her baby. Davina comes to her senses and sends the women away before helping Julia through labor.

Marriage

Because Simon believes Julia’s child is his and the future King of Scotland, he wants to marry her before the child is born to make the child legitimate. He tries to bust in on the birth but even the priest isn’t finding this a good plan.

We get flashbacks of Claire’s birth with Henry by her side. This babies birth is nothing like the loving setting we see at Claire’s birth.

At first the baby doesn’t cry but through a little care from Davina, Julia’s baby boy comes around.

Brian’s Brother

Earlier in the episode, Julia confesses to Brian that the baby isn’t Simon’s. She slept with him and told him it was his to protect herself and her baby. Brian isn’t happy about the lie, but he isn’t going to tell anyone.

Brian is curious how he can please his father, but Simon wants Brian to be a ruthless and terrible person advancing himself at the expense of others. But Brian is his mother’s son and cares for people. This means he will never please Simon.

When Simon comes to the birthing room to get Julia, Davina stands in his way. Angered, Simon goes to strike her, but Brian intervenes and Simon calls for the strap to whip him.

Brian goes to see his “brother” later to keep up pretenses. He let’s Julia know he is going to help her find Henry. Brian also confides that he doesn’t know his birthday as no one has ever celebrated it including his mother. He blames himself for Davin’s hard life. Julia assures him he is Davina’s greatest joy. Julia puts a candle in a nearby cake for Brian to blow out.

Upsetting News

Henry is determined to find midwives to see if any have helped his wife give birth. Arch shares that his wife and he had a stillborn baby that nearly killed Murdina. He seems to have some compassion for Henry, but it doesn’t last as we see later. Arch gives Henry hope saying Isaac Grant can get these midwives to come to Castle Grant.

Henry finally feels closer to finding Julia but is then told Julia and the baby died in childbirth. Henry, at first, isn’t willing to believe it but it becomes too much for Henry. He slips into his memories of the war ending and we see him running towards the brothel yelling the war is over. When he gets to the brothel he goes to the woman at the brothel imagining it is Julia in 1918.

The prostitute realizes Henry has lost it and goes along with it. She takes him to bed. Henry has truly lost touch with reality.

But we get to see Arch Bug and Isaac Grant pay off the woman who told the terrible story that is all lies—which we know because Julia is at Castle Leathers.

I’ve heard some say how horrible Henry is for cheating, but it is clear Henry isn’t in his present. He can actually please temporary insanity.
