Recap: 110 Something Borrowed

Ellen prepares for her wedding day, while Julia attempts her escape.

Something Borrowed opens in the 1920s. It is Claire’s second birthday and Uncle Lamb is there to help the Beauchamp’s celebrate. And in the 18th century we see a woman walking down the aisle. Is Ellen going through with the marriage to Malcolm?

Brian’s Concern

There are assassins after Brian. Murtagh and Brian need to know who is after him, but Brian is far more concerned with Ellen’s words and the look in her eyes when she told him she didn’t love him. Murtagh is a bit taken aback that Brian wants to focus on Ellen when there are men after him but agrees they have a rare love and it is possible Ellen was forced to say those things to keep the assassins off Brian.

One of the assassins confesses that Colum MacKenzie sent them after Brian. The two are determined to tell Ellen what her brother has been up to.

Meanwhile Ellen is preparing for her wedding and receive a pearl necklace from an admirer—but we know from the very first season of Outlander that Marcus MacRannoch sent the pearls because he was in love with Ellen also.

Dougal is getting busy with Maura Grant’s maid and Maura catches them. She doesn’t act embarrassed rather finding the situation amusing.

Ellen apologizes to Jocasta for being part of arranging Jocasta’s marriage without Jocasta’s permission. Ellen, Jocasta and Janet have a beautiful sisterly moment together. The sisters and Glenna even make bawdy jokes much to the dismay of the Grant women. Jocasta and Ellen have come to something of an understanding, and it feels like Jocasta is on Ellen’s side now.

Getting Into Leoch

Brian sneaks into Leoch to let Ellen know about Colum’s activities. To do so he must knock out a Grant and dress like one. As he moves through the Castle, he runs into Jocasta who knows he’s not a Grant and remembers him from Beltane.

Brian confesses to Jocasta, who decides to help Brian and Ellen. She didn’t get to marry for love but she’s willing to help Ellen. When they tell Ellen, Ellen—in MacKenzie fashion—doesn’t tell Colum what she knows but instead tries to get him to confess. Colum doesn’t confess but rather gifts a quill and ink set to Ellen. Colum had his chance and because he didn’t take it, Ellen will shift her loyalties and go with Brian.

Glenna and Jocasta help hide Brian and Ellen until the ceremony starts so they have the opportunity to get away without being seen. Because Ellen isn’t there to marry Malcolm, Dougal is then forced to marry Maura. Oh these turn of events are some of my favorite. I see the attraction there and I’m here for their story.

Neither Maura nor Dougal are keen on the marriage, but when it comes to consummation they discover they are on the same page.

Brian and Ellen Escape

As Brian and Ellen are escaping, they run into a distraught Malcolm. Malcolm and Brian end up fighting and—what can only be an epic change for the show—Malcolm is stabbed and dies—yeah he didn’t die in the story Jamie tells Claire.

The two catch up with Murtagh who was shot in the leg with an arrow back when they were fighting the Assassins. The lovebirds tell Murtagh what happened and they all stay together while Murtagh is healing enough to walk.

Before Murtagh leaves he gives Ellen a wedding gift: tusks made into bracelets—which we are told in Outlander were given to Ellen, but Murtagh after they are gifted to Claire. Ellen will keep the gift between them—yeah Brian never knew who gave Ellen all these gifts.

Now that Brian and Ellen are finally alone the two can spend the night together. They get to have a little time together before the two emerge to see fiery crosses lit all over the countryside. The Jacobite Rising of 1715 is starting. Brian is going to have to join or leave Scotland forever and Ellen plans to be with him no matter his choice—but we know they end up at Lallybroch.

To the Stones

In the meantime, Julia needs to get away from Leoch without getting Davina tangled up in her mess. She has Davina to tell Balloch she’s been kidnapped after they are well away. This way no one is at fault—but if they catch Henry he’ll likely die!

When she’s with Henry, she has no time to tell him her plan and just asks him to trust her before pretending she’s in distress calling out to Balloch. Balloch comes after her but Henry hits him over the head with a rock that says SWAK—how apropos.

Julia, Henry and William ride off on horseback for the standing stones knowing someone will be after them. And sure enough Arch Bug is after Henry and wants him dead.

When they reach Craigh na Dun, they finally think it is possible William will not be able to travel. Jula suggests one of them go through with William and if for some reason he can’t travel the other will be with him. That could work except Arch Bug is fast approaching. Julia wants Henry to go through as she has a cover story, but Henry isn’t having it and places her hand on the stones.

Did they get through? Will they be caught? What is going to happen?????

1920s

We learn exactly how Henry and Julia ended up in the past. Henry was sent to Scotland on business and decides to make it a holiday with Julia.

Claire is left with Uncle Lamb while they are gone.

Julia tells Henry she’s pregnant with their second child.

And we see a five year old Claire with Uncle Lamb waving to Henry and Julia from a train platform. Sadly, this is the last time Claire will see her parents according to Outlander, but Blood of My Blood changed Malcolm’s fate so I suppose Claire could see her parents again. Though in Outlander Claire’s parents died in a car accident. So I’m wondering if Julia and Henry every make it back to the 20s.
