A new neighbor relies on the Frasers for help, and Jamie exposes a false ally. William looks into the mysterious circumstances of his cousin’s death.

Abies Fraseri is apparently the scientific name for Fraser fir which is an endangered species of fir in the Appalachian region (being where Fraser’s Ridge is located). I have to wonder if this is a play on Jamie’s life being endangered or the whole of the people there because of the war.
There Is That Blue Light Again
A family comes to the Ridge seeking a healer because a woman is in childbirth which appears to not be progressing. Claire brings them into her surgery and soon diagnoses the babies as breach. Yes, babies. They woman is having twins. Claire works her “magic” and successfully delivers the first baby, a boy. But the second, a baby girl arrives with now signs of life. Claire is hit hard, remembering Faith. She is unwilling to give up and takes the baby aside. When all conventional methods seems to fail, Claire seems to reach inside herself and will the child to live.
Jamie watches on and when the girl begins to cry, he is shocked. Claire tells Jamie she remembered the blue light when Raymond healed her in Paris, and it came out of her to heal the child. But Jamie didn’t see a blue light. This begs the question, can only time travelers see said light?
Claire does ask Jamie what color her hair is hearkening back to when Adawehi (Common Ground) tells Claire her power will grow with age. I believe in the book it is when her hair is white. This is indicated when Jamie tells her all the colors of the earth but around her face it is like moonlight (or something like that). Claire’s abilities are growing.
Claire’s Third Husband
Claire receives a letter from Lord John which doesn’t make for a very happy Jamie. He stomps off at this point but the resolve it later. Fanny seems worried about Jamie’s ire, but Claire assures her she can handle Jamie.
But word from Lord John is that William is around and so John thinks Brianna should come to town to paint Amaranthus and Trevor’s portrait. Or in Lord John speak… let’s get these siblings together!
Bree is at the trading post with Fanny who gets harassed by some soldiers. When Brianna returns and hears of Lord John’s request; Roger and she come up with the idea of going and buying guns with the Frenchman’s Gold.
William Has a Thing For Every Woman He Meets
What is up with William? He meets Rachel and falls for her. Then he meets Jane and falls for her. Now he’s in the presence of Amaranthus for a while and he’s falling for her too. I mean he needs a woman he can actually have but this is his cousin’s “widow.”
While searching for the truth about Ben, William discovers Lord John was the governor at Ardsmuir where Jamie was incarcerated.
Lord John comes into contact with his once stepbrother Percy who he had an affair with once upon a time (never liked this bit) and who is apparently something of a rogue. Percy wants Lord John to get him in contact with Fergus Fraser. Intrigue!
After William returns to Savannah his interactions with Amaranthus become somewhat flirtier. She gives him an embroidered waistcoat she made for Ben with beetles all over it—her father is a botanist. And she kisses William making me wonder if she’s actually who she says she is or is trying to secure a husband through the rich William. But can we trust her? She knows things? Was she really Ben’s wife? All signs point to yes when Amaranthus opens a drawer in Ben’s desk where we see the toy soldier he left for Trevor.
So why the story line of William investigating the death of his cousin, which honestly seems like a pointless story line. The reason is because we are getting to know William better and see what is important to him. But the other reason is to see his reasoning and investment in Amaranthus.
He’s Really the Enemy
Jamie learns Captain Cunningham is actually a spy for the British army who are recruiting soldiers amongst Jamie’s tenants. Not great Bob! And Cleveland and the Overmountain Men are arming their militia which is making Jamie very uncomfortable. While Cunningham tries to hide his allegiances Jamie realizes he’s getting coded messages and confronts the Captain. Jamie rides home with a lot to think about.
And the theme this episode is trust. Can the family in need trust Jamie and Claire? Well that answer is a definite yes! But can Cunningham be trusted—NO! And what about Amaranthus? If she is Ben’s widow why is she after William? There is also the whole conversation about Frank and whether or not his book can be trusted.
